Brother Matthias of the Hospital

Relic Guardian / First Known Keeper

New_L&F_15thC_scroll_background_2_edited.png

Hidden Hints

He was not protecting the relic from them.
He was protecting them from it.

BROTHER MATTHIAS OF THE HOSPITAL

Affiliation: Knights Hospitaller

Brother Matthias was a member of the Knights Hospitaller, encountered during a covert operation conducted under the Crusader host in the period of the Third Crusade.

He is identified as the individual targeted by the directive:

Find the Hospitaller.
Recover the relic.
Leave no witnesses.

At the time of contact, Matthias was positioned within a religious structure, standing beside an altar. He appeared wounded, with visible blood loss suggesting prior engagement or prolonged defense.

Despite this, he remained standing.

Armed.

Prepared.

The black cross upon his surcoat confirmed his affiliation. No additional insignia or rank designation has been recorded.

Matthias did not attempt retreat.

He did not initiate negotiation.

His behavior indicates a singular objective:

To prevent the relic from being taken.

The nature of the relic remains undefined, though subsequent interpretations suggest it may represent the earliest known instance of the object later referred to as “the key.”

No verified record confirms the outcome of the encounter.

There is no confirmation of Matthias’s survival.

No confirmation of his death.

What remains is his position at the moment of contact.

Between the relic…

and those sent to claim it.

NOTES

Some men guard objects.
