Katerina from Marmaris
Interpreter • Merchant's Clerk • Dream Chaser

Hidden Hints
She reinvented herself long before meeting Matteo.
Few people know the sacrifices she made to leave her village behind.
She admired Matteo's intellect, but never truly understood his obsession.
She believed love should lead toward the future, not into danger.
Matteo's departure became only one chapter of her story.
Sometimes choosing yourself is the bravest decision of all.
Born into a farming family near Marmaris, Katerina was expected to live the same life as generations before her. The fields promised security, but never the future she imagined.
Refusing to accept that fate, she left home while still young and found work in Smyrna under a Venetian trading company. There she received an education few women of her background could hope for, learning languages, commerce, and diplomacy. When she eventually returned to Marmaris, she was no longer the village girl who had departed years before.
Confident, articulate, and fiercely independent, Katerina dreamed of becoming part of the wider Mediterranean world.
Her meeting with Matteo Albrizzi seemed, at first, like destiny. Both were educated. Both looked beyond the ordinary lives expected of them. Their conversations flowed naturally, and she soon believed she had found someone who shared her ambitions.
But Matteo's heart was never entirely free. His search for the Fourth Language drew him toward dangers that Katerina neither understood nor wished to follow. What she mistook for lasting love slowly revealed itself as two lives moving in different directions.
In time, Katerina chose certainty over unanswered questions, building a future of her own through marriage and the life she had always worked to achieve.
Years later, Matteo would think of her not with regret, but with acceptance. At least one question had finally been answered.
