Petko was born in the Bulgarian lands during the dark years of Ottoman rule. Raised among shepherds, hunters, and villagers burdened by heavy taxes and constant fear, he grew up listening to stories of Tsar Ivan Shishman, the old Bulgarian kingdom, and the heroes who had once defended the mountains.
From an early age, he refused to bow his head. While other boys learned to survive through obedience, Petko learned to fight. His strength, fearlessness, and stubborn spirit quickly turned him into a natural leader.
As he grew older, his dream became clear: to drive the Ottomans from Bulgarian soil and restore the lost kingdom. He joined groups of rebels operating in the mountains, attacking caravans, freeing prisoners, and protecting isolated villages from cruel officials.
Eventually, the authorities declared him an outlaw. After years of pursuit, he was captured and condemned to exile in distant Dyarbekir. Yet even there, separated from his homeland by hundreds of miles, Petko never abandoned his oath.
For him, Bulgaria remained more than a land.
It was a promise.
