Location Profile
Perched high above the lowlands of the Tundzha River, the ruins of Matochina Fortress—known in earlier times as Bukelon—stand as a silent witness to centuries of conflict and shifting empires. Once fortified by Roman, Byzantine, and later Bulgarian hands, the stronghold commanded the surrounding plains, its tower watching over a land where armies would inevitably clash.
It was here, in the shadow of these walls, that one of the most decisive moments of the medieval Balkans unfolded. In 1205, near Bukelon, the forces of Tsar Kaloyan shattered the army of the Fourth Crusade. Among the fallen was Baldwin I of Flanders, whose capture would echo across kingdoms.
Today, the fortress lies in ruin—its stones weathered, its purpose forgotten by time. Yet the height it commands, and the silence that surrounds it, suggest that not all that happened here was ever recorded.
