Location Profile
Veliko Tarnovo—known as the City of the Tsars—rises above the winding Yantra River, its ancient walls still guarding the memory of empires. Once the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, it stood as a center of power, faith, and culture, built across the hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora.
But history alone does not explain its significance.
Within The Curse of the Crusader universe, Tarnovo(also referred to as Turnovgrad) marks a critical point of convergence. It is here that the modern sequence of events begins—with the murder of Petar Petrov, an act that triggered the first known investigation tied to the fragments of the Key.
The city is also the birthplace of Elena Ognen (née Kostova), as well as Petar Petrov himself—two lives connected long before the events that would unfold here.
References to Tarnovo appear throughout multiple accounts, including A Legacy of Shadows and Redemption (The Emperor’s Legacy, A Billionaire’s End, A Madness of the Fallen Emperor) and continue across The Echoes of a Cursed Vow.
Its geography is not incidental.
Encircled by the river, divided across three fortified hills, Tarnovo reflects a pattern seen elsewhere—division surrounding a central point.
A structure.
A design.
Whether this design is historical… or intentional… remains unresolved.
What is certain is this:
The first death was not random.
And Tarnovo was never just the beginning.
Hidden Hints
THE FIRST THREAD
Some mysteries begin with a discovery. Others begin with a death.
For The Curse of the Crusader, the trail leads back to Veliko Tarnovo — the ancient capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire.
It was here that Petar Popov's investigation first brought the Key into the modern world. What appeared to be an isolated discovery soon became something far more dangerous. Years later, Vladislav Ivanov and Detective Boris Ognen would find themselves drawn into the same web of secrets.
But Veliko Tarnovo holds more than the beginning of an investigation. Somewhere between its ancient walls, forgotten records, and buried memories lies the first thread connecting the Key, the curse, and events that began centuries ago.
Acre. Cherven. Tarnovo. Three places. One mystery.
