Case II — When Unity Turned Against Itself

If the first fracture showed the loss of moral clarity, the second revealed something even deeper:

Division within the faith itself.

The Fourth Crusade abandoned its sacred mission entirely. Instead of marching toward Jerusalem, the Crusaders turned against Constantinople—the heart of Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

In 1204, they conquered and looted the city.

From that act, the Latin Empire was born—imposed over lands that shared the same roots of belief, yet were now treated as enemies.

This was no longer a war of religions.
It was a war within one.

The illusion of unity shattered.

Resistance followed swiftly. Among the strongest responses came from Tsar Kaloyan of Bulgaria, who defeated the Crusader forces at the Battle of Adrianople in 1205. His victory halted their expansion and exposed the deep fracture within Christendom.

The crusade, once meant to defend faith, had turned against its own reflection.
